O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. Her nomination was for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for every year.
