O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High school in 1981. She was a part of a couple of television commercials, before moving to Los Angeles. Her first assignment was modeling in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later cast as a recurring role in the ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Apart from guest-starring in various shows, and in independent films as well as made-for television movies She also starred as a star of several TV series. Donna Abandando was her first large role on ABC's crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the unit between 1993 and 1996. Her nomination was for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for every year. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
